Wines

1985

  • Montrachet - Marquis de Laguiche (June 2012): Not Oxidized. Not profound, but delightful. A little early for these PreMox pages, but occasional reminders of aged Montrachet surely have value. [NTyson]

1986

  • Montrachet - Marquis de Laguiche (August 2012): Not Oxidized. In fact, incredibly youthful. I think I opened this 5- 10 years too soon, looked and tasted much younger than the 2001 Sauzet Le Montrachet that was alongside. A really beautiful wine. [P Mesrobian]
  • Montrachet (Oct 2011): purchased on release, shared with A. Meadows, clearly fabulous and still youthful, Wow [R Younger]

  • Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières (Mar 2011): showing oxidation on the nose but still relitively fresh on the palate for its age [droch]

  • Montrachet (Sep 2004): early signs of oxidation, fading quickly [John Gilman]
  • Montrachet (07 Jul 2005): controversial. I detected no overt signs of oxidation, but the color was medium gold (similar to the 96 Leflaive Chevalier on 7/27), rated 93. However, another member of the board at the same tasting (Howard Horwitz) did think the Montrachet was oxidized. [Don Cornwell]

  • Beaune Clos De Mouches Blanc (Nov 2008): not oxidized and delicious [AT Bridge]
  • Beaune Clos De Mouches Blanc (May 2009): much more advanced, partially oxidized, still barely drinkable [AT Bridge]
  • Beaune Clos De Mouches Blanc (Mar-May 2013): From case of 12; 2 not oxidized, very youthful and delicious; 6 quite oxidized (very mature, deep gold color, honeyed nose, but still drinkable. The remainder are unopened. I do not agree with observations regarding poor vintage as a disqualifying justification to rule out premox on 15 year bottles: This entire case has shown a very 'binary' flavor profile, the bottles either being very fresh, or clearly premox'd despite identical aging conditions and provenance. All corks showed exceptionally tight, dense, regular and were in perfect condition once pulled. They were also very long, and none showed a drop of seepage, nor did the foil capsule. A visual inspection of the 2 corks sealing the good bottles vs the premox'd bottles has not brought any new elements to surface. An eye opening experience and clearly suggesting premox can be circumscribed to contamination from the wine container at some stage (barrel or bottle/cork), IMHO. This producer has used exceptional quality controlled cork in the bottling process. This clearly rules out the “variable cork density air permeability” hypothesis. I've opened bottles of aged Musar, a textbook example of terrible cork quality, and his older wines have shown far less striking signs of oxidation than these Drouhins, even when most showed various levels of seepage, which is the best indication outside air has permeated to the wine.
