• Ed. Note: For a decade, Domaine Leflaive was one of the very small group of producers who had virtually no premox problems. But beginning with the 2006 vintage, the Leflaive wines have had HUGE oxidation problems with a large percentage of the bottles oxidized. In the annual vintage assessment dinners, we encountered oxidized Leflaives fromt he 2006, 2007 and 2008 vintages. Domaine Leflaive went from one of the six most reliable white burgundies you could buy – to one of the worst performers. Many of my friends and colleagues have stopped buying Leflaive altogether. Leflaive now acknowledges premox problems with the 2006, 2007 and 2008 vintages. Beginning with the 2014 vintage, Domaine Leflaive has begun using DIAM 30 closures. Hopefully, that will return Leflaive to the top tier of performers, but at this point I'm concerned about what we'll see from vintages 2009 through 2013 as these wines mature.
  • There have been rumors for some time (since 2020, if not earlier) that the domaine retasted all of its archives in response to the numerous complaints about serial premature oxidation of its wines starting with the 2005 vintage. Those bottles deemed to be in fine condition were topped up, recorked, & sealed with wax (or wax/composite) capsules, & then released at a substantial premium into the market without any comment beyond the implicit “assurance” provided by the new capsules. I have seen (in Mar. 2021) a 2004 Bienvenues–Bâtard–Montrachet at a reputable retailer in Hong Kong that fits this description, with a selling price equivalent to ~US$800. It's pretty cheeky that the domaine has turned into a handsome profit opportunity the abysmal experiences of at least 2 generations of customers, whose bottles of Leflaive grands & premiers crus had to be decanted into a drain. [Rayner Cheung]

  • General:The wines, except for Bourgogne, are fermented in cask (20% new for premier cru, 25% for grand crus except Montrachet, which is 100%). Batonnage has been reduced over the years, from initially twice a day during the primary alcoholic fermentation to now no more frequently than twice a week, with the batonnage stopped in December of the vintage year. However the wines are kept on the lees until they are racked just before the next vintage. After that racking, the wines (except for Montrachet) are moved into 10-barrel stainless steel tanks for another 6 to 8 months. The wines are fined with casein and/or bentonite and bottled by gravity usually in April or May, 18 to 20 months after the vintage. Leflaive generally membrane filters the bottom of each vat (about 8 to 10% of the juice) before bottling. Leflaive's free SO2 target level in the finished wine is 25-28 ppm, but Leflaive monitors and adds small amounts of SO2 throughout the elevage
  • In vintage 1995: batonnage regime after primary fermentation not disclosed.
  • In vintage 1996: used batonnage; frequency not disclosed, but lees stirred until at least the end of May 1997.
  • In vintage 1999: batonnage done “one to two times a week from October [99] to December [99].” (Don Cornwell ed. note: this is radically different than the Pierre Morey/Morey-Blanc batonnage scheme.)
  • In vintage 2002: “I did less bâtonnage in ’02 compared to ’01 as I didn’t want the wines to become top heavy.” According to Stephen Tanzer, Leflaive stopped stirring the lees in December 2002, even though most of the ML's did not finish until April 2003.
  • In vintage 2003: average ph of the post-fermentation wines was 3.57
  • In vintage 2004: “I stirred the lees for a bit longer than usual to help fatten the mid-palates.” Average ph of the post-fermentation wines was 3.16.
  • In vintage 2014: Began using DIAM 30 closures with the 2014 vintage.

Pure class, with sweet white flowers in the nose. Plenty of zest & exceptional balance on the palate. If only all Leflaive wines from subsequent vintages would age like this … . • Chevalier Montrachet(27 July 2010): Tasted at Leflaive Chevalier vertical: medium to full gold color; sweet apricot and almost botrytis like aromas; distinctly sweet lemon-lime and orange citrus and cornbread flavors on the palate (like the last bottle tasted in February) and not much like other Leflaive Chevaliers; very odd wine. I subsequently determined that the bottles tasted in Dec 2008, Feb 2010 and this bottle were all from a batch purchased from Rochambeau about a year after the wine was released and all likely suffered from heat damage somewhere along the way. [Don Cornwell]

Smoky lime zest & white flowers in the nose. Glorious flavors of lime marmalade & orchard fruits on the palate. Lively acidity provides just the right balance to the richness of this wine. Reminiscent of the 1996 Chevalier (tasted in 2017) which had many of the same characteristics except that the acidity was overwhelming. From a lot of 2 purchased in Dec. 2013 from the auction platform of a reputable West Coast retailer. [Rayner Cheung]

  • Puligny Pucelles(March 2011) : 3 bottles : 1 good , 1 fully ready ( golden color ) and 1 oxidised ( Herwig Janssen ). All from same case.
  • Puligny Pucelles(March-April 2011) : 2 bottles from a recently delivered case straight from the Domaine, served blind to several tasters (including Herwig Janssen): 1 clearly premox, followed the bottle over 4 days, no improvement, 1 discussion between tasters whether it was premox or just muted. [??]
  • Puligny Pucelles(May 2011) : 2 bottles tasted recently from a case of 6 (purchased from the official Swiss importer of the domaine and stored by importer until purchase): 1 clearly oxidised, but being a lover of sherry was drinkable but absolutely not a 9 year old Pucelles from a good producer and vintage, 1 in fine condition (Timothy Magnus)

From a lot of 2 purchased in Sep. 2013 from the auction platform of a reputable West Coast retailer. [Rayner Cheung]

Quite understated in the nose relative to other vintages, with more minerality (even a hint of talcum powder) & less sweetness of white flowers. Likewise, the palate was subtle beyond recognition. Plenty of life ahead. Decanting was quite helpful from the 2nd btl onwards. From 6 btls purchased from a reputable West Coast retailer or its auction platform in Nov. 2014. [Rayner Cheung]

  • Batard Montrachet (Dec 2013): Tasted blind next to a Chassagne Montrachetc 1er cru from the same year but other producer, and the comparison was telling - Guess was a good Meursault from the 90s - Very buttery on the nose, fruit was gone, slight mushroom taste - very ripe taste in the mouth; this should be drunk very soon [JWPinxten]
  • Bâtard–Montrachet (Dec. 2018): 2 btls oxidized. From an OWC purchased in Jun. 2015 from the auction platform of a reputable West Coast retailer. [Rayner Cheung]
  • Chevalier-Montrachet (23 July 2009): Not oxidized, but without doubt the least impressive Leflaive Chevalier I've had to date. including some “off” vintages like 1998 [Don Cornwell]
  • Chevalier-Montrachet (Dec 2010): Very forward and short with acid awkwardly sticking out on the finish. The general consensus at the dinner was this was prematurely oxidised [I Hickman]
  • Chevalier Montrachet: Perhaps a touch oxidised; over-ripe and thick. Watch carefully! [Greg Munyard]
  • Chevalier Montrachet (May 2015): not oxidised but quite advanced and very ripe [RBE_NZ]
  • Chevalier–Montrachet (Mar. 2019): 2 btls not oxidized. This wine is still very much à point, but should probably be drunk up soon. Lovely nose of sweet white flowers & orchard fruits, with just a hint of honey. Lively on the palate, with the sweetness leavened by a mineral note in the finish. 14% ABV. From 2 btls purchased in Nov. 2015 from the auction platform of a reputable West Coast retailer. [Rayner Cheung]

  • Puligny-Montrachet (July 2014): Not Oxidized, but rather uninteresting [Adrian Latimer]
  • Puligny Pucelles (Nov 2012): Not oxidized, 3+ hours decant in big decanter - still stable [Stian Gårdsvoll]
  • Puligny Pucelles (Des 2012): Not oxidized, 2+ hours decant in big decanter - still stable [Stian Gårdsvoll]
  • Puligny Pucelles (July 2016): Had at a wine bar in Paris. Quite good. Not oxidized. But I would drink up. [Howard Cooper]
  • Puligny–Montrachet “Les Pucelles” (Feb. 2018 – Dec. 2018): 10 btls not oxidized + 2 btls oxidized/advanced. The healthy btls are delicious now, medium gold in color, with a lovely nose of white flowers, peach, & honeysuckle. A heavy wine, but perfectly balanced on the palate with acidity well–buffered by the fruit. Astonishing 14.5% alcohol by vol. From 2 lots of 6 purchased in Sep. 2014 from the auction platform of a reputable West Coast retailer. [Rayner Cheung]
  • Batard Montrachet (10 January 2015): Surprisingly oxidized [M. Premk]
  • Bâtard–Montrachet (Jun. – Aug. 2019): 1 btl not oxidized + 2 btls oxidized. The good btl was young & utterly delicious, with layers of citrus blossom & white flowers in the nose, & slightly exotic flavors of orchard fruits on the palate. Didn't feel like 14% ABV. Purchased from the auction platform of a reputable West Coast retailer in Nov. 2014. [Rayner Cheung]
  • Bourgogne (April 2012): 1 bottle oxidised, 1 bottle ok. [Magnus Wold Ueland]

  • Puligny–Montrachet “Les Combettes” (Aug. 2018 – May 2019): 4 btls oxidized/badly faded + 1 corked + 6 btls not oxidized. The good btls had a fabulously multifaceted nose & were delicious to drink: in one case there was slightly more prominent acidity than expected, while in another the essence of orchard fruit was almost painfully rich on the palate. From 11 btls purchased in May/Jun. 2014 & Jul. 2015 from the auction platform of a reputable West Coast retailer. [Rayner Cheung]
  • Puligny Pucelles (July 2012): 1 bottle oxidised, 1 bottle ok [Magnus Wold Ueland]

  • Puligny–Montrachet “Les Pucelles” (Jul. & Dec. 2015, Sep. & Nov. 2018): 4 btls not oxidized. White flowers & a hint of smoke in the nose. Delicious on the palate, with subtle orchard fruit flavors providing color against a vivid mineral background. From 4 btls purchased at retail in Napa in 2011. [Rayner Cheung]
  • Puligny Pucelles (October 2016): Magnum. Superb, green tinged, racy acidity, no signs of tiring and probably room for further development. [K. Lamb]
  • Puligny–Montrachet “Les Pucelles” (Jan. 2019 – May 2019): 7 btls oxidized + 5 btls fine. The good btls seemed to have slightly less fruit & more minerality than the ones consumed earlier this decade, but I'm nitpicking. From 2 lots of 6 btls purchased in Jan. & Jun. 2014 from the auction platform of a reputable West Coast retailer. [Rayner Cheung]

  • Puligny Clavoillon (October 2012): seemed almost acceptable at first, quickly oxidised with air [Frank Herfjord]
  • Puligny Clavoillon (May 2015)): 24 bottles opened for lunch-4 brutally pre-moxed and 6 seemed okay. Other 14 early pre-mox to varying degrees. [R Younger]
  • Puligny Clavoillon (Feb 2016)): Magnum. Oxidized. [AT Bridge]
  • Puligny Clavoillon (June 2019): Golden, no need even to taste. Dead. [Adrian Latimer]

  • Batard Montrachet (Aug 2013); no oxidation and a stunning tight wine[R Younger]
  • Batard Montrachet (Feb 2014); no oxidation and very young[TSim@rud]
  • Bâtard–Montrachet (Nov. 2021 – Jun. 2022): 1 btl borderline oxidized + 1 btl fine. The good btl was pale to medium gold, with a floral nose complicated by mineralité. On the palate, a taste of dried peaches, citrus peel, & minerals. Similar in style to the 2005, but less sweet & less powerful. 13% ABV. From a lot of 2 purchased in May 2015 from the auction platform of a reputable West Coast retailer. [Rayner Cheung]
  • Bienvenue Batard-Montrachet (Feb 2014): not oxidized. [TSim@rud]
  • Chevalier Montrachet (Feb 2014): no oxidation. [TSim@rud]
  • Puligny-Montrachet (Feb 2014): no oxidation. [TSim@rud]
  • Puligny–Montrachet “Les Combettes” (Jun. 2021 – Oct. 2022): 5 btls not oxidized + 1 btl advanced but drinkable. The good btls had an appropriate palish lemon yellow color. Decanting is recommended as it took > 30 mins to open up & to reveal floral complications to the citrus pith in the nose. Gained weight & sweetness from exotic fruit elements, again after plenty of air. Like the 2010 Pucelles, this wine is still at an early adolescent stage, at least insofar as btls with the right color are concerned. From a lot of 6 purchased in Aug. 2015 from the auction platform of a reputable West Coast retailer. [Rayner Cheung]
  • Puligny Clavoillon (Sept 2016): not oxidized but pretty advanced - from magnum no less (R DeAngelo)
  • Puligny Montrachet Pucelles(Jan 2014): not oxidised [TSim@rud]
  • Puligny Montrachet Pucelles(Sept 2020): Oxidised [Jammy Wine]
  • Puligny–Montrachet “Les Pucelles” (May 2021 – Jun. 2022): 5 btls not oxidized + 1 btl amber gold in color, but the aromatics & flavors were quite fine. Powdered lemon & lime candy, stone, & a little musk in the nose. More citrus on the palate, together with peach pit & lemondrops. A very different style of Pucelles compared with something even as recent as the 2007 (which exhibited a more diverse range of fruit elements – see above), but this may reflect the vintage more than any change in winemaking approach, since comparable wines at comparable domaines are also exhibiting this citrus–heavy character. From a lot of 6 purchased in Aug. 2015 from the auction platform of a reputable West Coast retailer. [Rayner Cheung]

  • Puligny Montrachet (Sep 2014): no oxidation. @Le Bernardin [N. Lau]
