Background information

  • General: (From a 2014 Decanter profile on Lafon): Montrachet is the only wine to be aged entirely in new oak. The premiers crus are aged in a proportion that varies from 25% to 40% and the wine stays in wood for 16 months. Lees-stirring is used sparingly – ‘usually when the fermentation is slow to finish or when the wine is reduced’, he says. His cellars are notoriously cold, so fermentations can be slow and the young wines benefit from long ageing before being racked and fined. [Note: In the same profile Dominique admits that he uses the “hyperoxidation” technique on “the last 10%” of the juice. Discussed elsewhere, this controverisal technique allows the juice to completely oxidize and drop out all polyphenols as precipitates before fermentation. ]
  • In vintage 1995: lighter batonnage than normal, stopped stirring at the end of January 96. Frequency not disclosed.
  • In vintage 1996: used batonnage; lees stirred until April 97, but less “than in the old days due to oxidation concerns.”
  • In vintage 1999: did “minimal” stirring of the lees.
  • In vintage 2000: the wines “tended to be more reductive and thus I've done more batonnage than in 1999.”
  • In vintage 2002: Lafon says that normally he does no batonnage after the ML is completed, but in 2002 the wines were very reductive after ML and so they stirred the lees twice after the ML completed.
  • In vintage 2003: absolutely no batonnage
  • In vintage 2004: “I did very little bâtonnage, in fact a good deal less than usual.” According to John Gilman, in some published March 2005 notes, “Lafon is now rolling his barrels to mix up the fine lees during the early stages of the elevage, rather than opening them up and stirring them, as he feels this was allowing too much oxygenation of the young wines.” Also according to Gilman (in Issue #19), since the 2004 vintage Lafon has been using unbleached corks that are coated with 100% paraffin (no silicone.)
  • In vintage 2005: Lafon did more stirring of the lees in 2005 than in 2004 because the wines were very reductive. According to Allen Meadows, Lafon has slightly raised the amount of free SO2 at bottling, has tightened its standards for corks. Meadows also confirms the elimination of silicone coatings and that all corks are now coated with 100% paraffin.
  • In vintage 2013: Lafon began using DIAM 30 composite corks and is bottling the whites with 35 ppm of free SO2.

  • Meursault Charmes(April 2012): 2 bottles from 8 purchased from wine trader - both showing obvious oxidative character. Poor storage? (Timothy Magnus)
  • Meursault Charmes(Mar 2014): med gold and darker than expected; reduction at first?, then opens up with more air; a little butterscotch and caramel always evident in the nose and mouth, but lots of weight and powerful acidity to counter it; hard to call this premox but it's certainly not fresh; probably will drink these up sooner rather than later (MSaviage)
  • Meursault Goutte d'Or(28 May 2011): not oxidized. Reductive at first but evened out with more time. [Stu Jakub].
  • Meursault Genevrieres(December 2012): Oxidized. (JasonH)
  • Meursault Genevrieres(Feb 2012): Oxidized - so sad!. (Harald S e l t e)
  • Meursault Genevrieres (Jan 2016): not oxidized and in great shape… medium gold, rich and round, but with less acidity than I would have expected in an 04 (Mike Saviage)
  • Meursault Genevrieres (Oct 2019): Out of 3 bottles, one was badly premoxed, and advanced and one fresh. [Jammy Wine]
  • Meursault Charmes (Dec 2012) very oxidized! (B. Greene)
  • Meursault Charmes (May 2015) very oxidized, down the sink (Adrian Latimer)
  • Meursault Clos de la Barre(Nov 2012): partially oxidized at first, but improved somewhat with air. Anyway, not what it should be [Ville Viinikka]
  • Meursault Clos de la Barre (June 2013): not oxidized (MSaviage)
  • Meursault Desiree (Apr 2014): odd - do not think oxidised, but flat, no acidity, very disappointing. advanced or just the year? worse than '04 (Adrian Latimer)
  • Meursault Perrieres (February 2014): Consumed from reputable restaurant cellar in Beaune. Not obviously oxidised but clearly showing signs of advanced development and certainly not typical for a 2005 burgundy at this age. [No Name, take with grain of salt]
  • Meursault (November 2014): Smelled oxidative in character but not oxidized. Fresh nutty notes off the top. Past its prime. (Jackson R)
  • Montrachet (November 2015): Drunk at a restaurant in Alsace legendary for its wine list. Impeccable storage. Dead and gone, totally sherried. Waitress commented when I sent the bottle back that all 2005 Lafon was like this, though other years were much better. (Timothy Magnus)
  • Meursault(March 2010): not oxidised [Julien Martel]
  • Meursault(August 2010): not oxidised [Julien Martel]

  • Meursault Charmes(October 2011): not oxidised [Julien Martel]

  • Meursault Goutte d'Or(Sep 2011): not oxidised, very good [KI]
  • Meursault Clos de le Barre (July 2011): oxidized [Hunter Landrum]
  • Meursault Clos de la Barre (July 2014): eureka! Not ox, lovely (Adrian latimer)
  • Meursault Clos de le Barre (Dec 2014): oxidized [Will Cashman]
  • Meursault–Perrières (May 2016, May 2019, Nov. 2019): 3 btls not oxidized. On both occasions, the nose was reluctant & the flavors were reserved. Tightly packed with extract, this wine would benefit from decanting and/or service in a glass with a wide bowl. The btl in 2019 was better on day 2. From a lot of 3 purchased at retail in Hong Kong in Mar. 2015. [Rayner Cheung]
  • Meursault(May 2011): not oxidised [Julien Martel]

  • Meursault Charmes (May 2014) not oxidized [Bill Lawrence]
  • Meursault Charmes (July 2014) Oxidized (APDH)
  • Meursault–Charmes (Sep. 2018 – May 2019): 3 btls not oxidized. Honeysuckle & orchard fruits in the nose. Well–judged acidity on the palate. 2 btls purchased at retail in Napa (Apr. 2011) & 1 btl in Hong Kong (Dec. 2011). [Rayner Cheung]
  • Meursault–Charmes (Jun. 2019 – Feb. 2020): 5 btls not oxidized. Magnificent wine still some way from full maturity. Pale gold color. Ripe pear & peach in the nose with a hint of caramel. Plenty of grip on the palate, with sweet orchard fruit flavors followed by steely minerality in the finish. From a lot of 5 purchased from the auction platform of a reputable West Coast retailer in Aug. 2015. [Rayner Cheung]
  • Meursault Genevrieres (July 2014): After two brilliant bottles earlier this year from the same case (both young, taut, mineral driven and racy), a third bottle was seriously premoxed.
  • Meursault Perrieres (24 Mar 2011): I don't normally post about wines less than 6 years old, but this wine was notably advanced – it tasted like a 7 or 8 year old wine. It was fabulous, but scary. Complete cork seal failure? I hope so, as I own a lot of this one [Don Cornwell]
  • Meursault–Perrières (Nov. 2019 – Oct. 2020): 3 btls not oxidized. Classic Lafon in the nose & on the palate with outstanding vinosity. A btl opened in Nov. 2019 was still youthful & less than fully expressive despite decanting. Another btl opened in May 2020 was showing significantly better after 30 mins in the glass. The lingering perfume in the carafe used to decant it was irresistible. 3rd btl in Oct. 2020 felt a little tired. Color is now yellow gold, but there's no sign of oxidation. From 3 btls purchased at retail in Hong Kong in Feb. 2015. [Rayner Cheung]
  • Meursault–Perrières (Nov. 2020 – Nov. 2021): 6 btls not oxidized. Drinking beautifully (as above) with no trace of sur–maturité. From a lot of 6 purchased from the auction platform of a reputable West Coast retailer in Apr. 2015. [Rayner Cheung]
  • Puligny-Montrachet, Champgain (March 2015): Vibrant, full of life and singing, not oxidized. [Ken Lamb]
  • Meursault Charmes(October 2011) Not Oxidized [Leah Amir]
  • Meursault Charmes (Feb 2013) not oxidized but very advanced - golden color and butterscotch on the nose - drink up (R DeAngelo)
  • Meursault Charmes (April 2015) oxidized - totally shot (R DeAngelo)
  • Meursault Clos de la Barre (May 2012) not oxidized [Julien Martel
  • Meursault Clos de la Barre (May 2013) not oxidized [droch]
  • Meursault Perrieres (Feb 2013) oxidized! (R DeAngelo)
  • Meursault Perrieres (Feb 2014) Oxidized (APDH)
  • Meursault Genevrieres (October 2014) oxidized [mm]
  • Montrachet (May 2015): Not oxidized but fully developed. Colour was troubling…deepish gold but not dull. Lots of honey on the nose and palate but a ripping acidic core. A very full bodied, big boy wine in the DRC Montrachet. Some might have taken a different view and found it a bit poxed but I didn't find any hints of tiring. Still, if you have it, you better drink it. [Ken Lamb]
  • Meursault Perrieres (March 2019) Coravin. Alarming pale gold. Actually very drinkable, impressive, but very advanced, tastes more like 1998 than 2008, big, rich, acidity but very mature (Adrian Latimer)

* Meursault Genevrieres (February 2020) not oxidized. great bottle very flinty on opening good acid got a little fat as it warmed up [Suzanne Camhi]

  • Meursault(June 2016) Not Oxidized [Adrian Latimer]
  • Meursault–Charmes (Oct. 2022 – ): 2 btls not oxidized. 13% ABV. Lovely nose of orchard fruits & citrus blossom. Quite delicious, with much better balance on the palate than the 2011 Porusots. From a lot of 6 purchased in May 2016 from the auction platform of a reputable West Coast retailer. [Rayner Cheung]
  • Meursault Clos de la Barre(Jan 2020) Super [Adrian Latimer]
  • Meursault–Porusots (Sep. 2022 – ): 3 btls not oxidized. 13% ABV. Best decanted, as this is made – running scared of premox – in the modern, rigidly reductive style of white Burgundy. That said, the citrus, floral, & mineral components fit together perfectly well, making for an enjoyable wine. What's missing are the grace & multidimensionality of Lafon's Meursaults from an earlier era that ended just a few vintages ago (e.g., orange blossom, orchard fruit, & just a little hedonism for chrissakes). From a lot of 6 purchased in Oct. 2015 from the auction platform of a reputable West Coast retailer. [Rayner Cheung]
  • Monthelie(April 2017) Not Oxidized [Adrian Latimer]
  • Meursault Clos de la Barre(2017, Sept 2018) very fine (Adrian Latimer)
  • Meursault Clos de la Barre (April 2017, 2018) reductive, tight, more like Roulot than Lafon, young, super (Adrian Latimer)

* Meursault Clos de la Barre(February 2011): not oxidised [Thomas Gratton]

  • Meursault(Dominique Lafon not Ct Lafon) (April 2019) very young (Adrian Latimer)
